I began school at seven in accordance with the law in a remote village. Short of funds, the school had only a few classrooms, all poorly constructed. Needless to say, our teachers were few, too. As a pupil I preferred the playground to the classroom and often liked to play tricks on girls, as by hiding insects in their desk drawers.

我按照偏远地区的法定年龄七岁开始上学。由于资金短缺，学校只有几间教室，全部的设备都很拙劣。不用说，我们的教师也很少。作为一名学生，我喜欢操场多于教室，常常喜欢在女孩子面前捣蛋，比如把昆虫藏在她们的抽屉里。

On one occasion, I even grimaced behind the back of our teacher, causing the whole class to break into laughter; however, instead of becoming angry, he merely asked why we were laughing and wondered whether there was anything wrong with him. On another occasion, I punctured the tires of a car parked inside the school by using something sharppointed, leaving the principal frightened and bewildered after he had noticed that. Such were the happy moments in my life at that school. The happiest moment, to me and to all of my schoolmates, however, was the one when the school was letting out at the last bell of the day and we were rushing home as if we would never be back. Once, on our way home, a bunch of naughty students found a crickets&39; hole and exerted themselves to inject water into it with loud cheers.

Preparations for the Chinese New Year in old China start well in advance of the New Year&39;s Day. The 24th of the twelfth month is set aside for the annual housecleaning. Every household will give a thorough cleaning to their houses, clothes, bedclothes and all utensils,(器具) to bid farewell to the old year and to usher in the new. It is believed the cleaning sweeps away bad luck and makes the house ready for good luck to enter. All brooms and dustpans are put away on New Year&39;s Eve so good luck cannot be swept away.
