  The newest voice of Britain

FORGET Westlife and the Take That. One of the hottest pop stars in Britain right now is 16-year-old Declan Galbraith. While most boys his age are enjoying playing computer games and sports, he is touring the world singing in front of thousands of people.

Next month Galbraith will arrive in China. He will hold a concert on May 24 to perform for his growing army of Chinese fans.

Galbraith has an amazing voice, the range (种类) of music he sings is diverse (多种多样的) and unusual for someone his age. As well as singing popular classics (经典) including, I'll be There and Angels, Galbraith also performs traditional Irish folk songs such as Danny Boy.

Galbraith first began performing at the age of seven when he appeared in a local play. After realizing he had a talent for singing, he began entering talent contests and won 15 competitions.

Soon after, major recording companies were soon knocking at his door and at the age of 9 he signed his first record contract (合同) for £1 million. His first album, Declan, a collection of Irish traditional songs became a big success.

In 2003, Galbraith even helped to break the world record for the most people taking part in a sing-along. He sang Tell Me Why live with 10,000 children and was also simultaneously (同时地) linked, by radio and satellite, with more than 80,000 children in their schools all over Britain.

At present he is just enjoying the moment because he knows that it will not last forever. "I just feel privileged (荣幸的) to have been given the opportunity", he says. "My greatest wish is simply to make music that people enjoy."

  Cheering by dance

WITH a beautiful smile on her face, Wang Anni, 17, proudly stepped off the special Olympic plane called "Journey of Harmony (和谐)" last Monday. Along with her, the Olympic flame arrived in Beijing from Greece and kicked off an international torch relay.

Wang, a Senior 2 student at Beijing No 2 Middle School, was the youngest delegate (代表) that took part in the ceremony (仪式) in Athens on March 30 for handing over of the Olympic flame from Greece to China. She was also the first Chinese student torchbearer (火炬手) of the Beijing Olympics.

But how did she get the opportunity to run with the flame as one of the 26 Chinese torchbearers in Greece, most of whom were famous people in different fields?

In fact, she has had a long history with the Beijing Olympics.

Wang started to dance when she was four years old. She is now the leader of her school's dance group. Wang and her group have danced during numerous official ceremonies concerning the Olympics since 2003 when she was a Junior 1 student. Every Tuesday and Friday, Wang and her group members practice for two hours after school. They also rehearse on Sunday afternoons.

"I cheer for the Games by dancing," she said. "The more I dance, the more I learn about the Olympic spirit of striving for excellence and perseverance (毅力)."

Due to her group's great performances, it was announced at the beginning of last month that Wang would go to Greece for the torch relay.

Surprised and excited, Wang had even started to practice her smiles and running in front of the mirror at home.

"I hoped to show my best side on behalf of all Chinese students," she explained. "But in fact, it all came naturally when the holy flame lit my torch. It also lit up my confidence and pride in my country."

Now, Wang is looking forward to the day, August 8, when her group will dance at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games in the Bird's Nest.
