My Attitude towards to Marks
For our students， marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us from our marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks， we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled into college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies. Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our society judge us from marks. However， sometimes we students compare one another with marks directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel sorry for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?
Truly， marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in our study， marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say "Everyone is equal before marks. "
However， I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure of students in eams. Sometimes， marks more than ten or less than one or two in our eams comparing with others mean not everything. The success or failure in eams will be influenced by eperience on the spot and the eaminee’s health etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in eams. " Success or failure is common sense for military. " I think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. Don’t you think such will be the case with our study? In eams， one cannot be " never-defeated general" . Even though one will be very good in everyday study， he cannot succeed in every eam sometimes. As a matter of fact， "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. Some time ago， a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. Once I happened to meet such a teacher as this .It is said that the teacher just graduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much less than that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. When lecturing， the teacher only repeated what the tet-books says， which was very dull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching was short of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we know a few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. The reason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from books with pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in every eam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don’t you think it waste training such persons for the country?
To sum up from the above， I can say marks are not absolutely authoritative for some. If we neglect training and developing the students’ ability and competence and if we only seek for the high marks， we will be absolutely wrong. We should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should we neglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

Ladies and Gentlemen: My topic is Honesty. As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story. /chuzhong/chusan/ 65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao.
Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure. In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth. He kept the tooth for the net 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life.
It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome. When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error. Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character. Thank you.

material waste: it means the waste of substance or things from which something else can be made.
for eample, people throw away the used metal products and buy a new one, so the old metal waste accumulates.
at last, they become waste.
for eample, when people finish reading newspaper, the paper will become waste.
when the glass is broken, it also becomes waste.
nobody wants to use a broken window or drink with a broken glass or wear a pair of broken glasses.
once it is broken, it becomes waste.
the rate of using plastics is increasing day by day.
people use plastic bags because they are convenient.
when they get home, they throw the plastics way, paying no attention to the environment.
the more convenience plastics brings to us, the more plastic waste is produced.
this is called “white pollution” as most plastics are white.
some of our products we use every day are made of rubber, just like the tyres and the bottom part of our shoes.
it’s true that rubber plays an important role in our life.
however, it also brings us some trouble when it has been used for a long time and becomes old.
the old tyres become waste because it can’t break down by nature.
this is really a big problem.
