　　Ugly Betty's a real beauty

　　BETTY Suarez is not a traditional American beauty. She has an unfashionable dress sense, thick red glasses, untidy hair and large metal braces (牙箍) on her teeth. But this hasn’t stopped her becoming one of Americans’ favorite TV characters. So how did she manage to do it?

　　The answer is that charm can be more appealing than beauty. Betty is the main character in a TV show called Ugly Betty. The show follows her life working as an assistant at a fashion magazine. She is constantly being bullied (欺负) and laughed at by the people she works with.

　　But Betty manages to get ahead by working hard, being charming and using her intelligence. The heart of the show is the slightly tired (老套的) fairytale of how a girl goes from being an ugly duckling (小鸭) into being a beautiful swan.

　　Despite the show being predictable and the story familiar, it has still been a massive success in the US. It has constantly high rating (收视率) and won two Golden Globes awards, one of the highest honors for a television program in the US.

　　Many people feel able to relate to the character Betty. “I think you can see a bit of Betty in all of us, and I mean men as well, because it’s about the underdog (弱者),” says Ashley Jensen, who plays one of the characters in the show.

　　Another reason why the program is so popular is the performance of the 23-year-old actress America Ferrera who plays Betty. She brings heart and soul to the character.

　　The second series has just started in the US. So there will be more adventures to come from the fashionably challenged Betty.
