Racing into theaters
HE'S cooler than cool when he is outside the car, but he goes crazy behind the wheel. As his name suggests, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a born driver, a great racer and the hero of the self-titled film, which is due to release on May 9 in the US.
Speed is a young man with natural racing instincts. His goal is to win the Crucible, a cross-country car-racing rally (赛会) that took the life of his older brother.
The owner of Royalton Industries wants to bring Speed on to his racing team. He makes Speed a lucrative (待遇好的) offer, but Speed rejects it, angering the owner.
Speed also uncovers a secret that some evil firms, including Royalton, are rigging (操纵) some of the biggest races and cheating to gain profit. Now Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win the race. Speed finds support from his family and enters the Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X. He seeks to rescue the racing sport.
You can expect many thrilling car racing scenes. With the help of computer technology, "you can see cars drive down crazy tracks, jumping in the air and doing things which basically can't be done in real life," said Joel Silver, producer of the film.
And Speed's car, Mach 5, is another highlight of the movie. The white car, with a bold red M on its hood (引擎罩), even outshines super spy James Bond's vehicle. Buttons on its steering wheel (方向盘) access the gadgetry (配件), including automatic jacks (千斤顶) to allow it to leap over obstacles, a bullet-and crash-proof cover that encloses the driver, which allows it to go under water. The car also has blades that saw down trees and bushes that are in the way.
The film is directed by the Wachowski Brothers, the creators of the Matrix trilogy (《黑客帝国》三部曲). This time they wanted to "make something that was a big family movie, a film for their nieces and nephews." But they have also promised they will create something that's much more fantastic than what we saw in the Matrix. We'll just have to wait and see.
