  Captain who has it all

CESC Fabregas appears to have it all. He is the star performer for top English premiership (英超) club Arsenal and a multimillionaire at the age of 21. If all of that wasn't enough, on November 24, Fabregas was appointed new captain of the club.

"It's a proud moment and a great honor," said the Spaniard (西班牙人). "But this is also a big responsibility. Together with my teammates, we have the spirit and commitment (承诺) to get back to winning and fulfill our potential."

However, there are people who doubt that Fabregas is too young to shoulder the responsibility. But Arsene __, the Arsenal manager, said: "It's not especially linked with age. Most of the time, responsibilities make you grow, make you become more mature (成熟的) and you deal with the situation."

Fabregas is one of rising talents among the young generation of players. He helped Spain to win the European Championship this year and has established himself as a key player for Arsenal.

But he does not want to settle for just being a good footballer.

He began a correspondence (函授) course in the equivalent (相当于) of A-levels (exams taken by students who want to go to university), fitting his studies around his football duties. "There are seven subjects, including math, science, Spanish, English and French. First I have to pass an exam. Then I have to do a course for one year and then I can go to university," he said.

Fabregas has not returned to the classroom in the traditional sense. Teachers come to his home to teach him math and science — "they are the most difficult" — for four hours a week. He does some of his tutorials (辅导课) via webcam (摄像头). Much of his time will be spent studying at home or on the road.

So, what is the motivation for this highly-paid young man with the football world at his feet? "I think it is good for the future," he said.

  Brazil's wonder kid

IN football, nothing is more valuable than the wonder kid. Managers spend plenty of their time searching for these rare gems (宝石).

Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira is one such gem from Brazil. He won the Tuttosport Golden Boy Trophy (奖杯) on December 7. The award is given to the best player in Europe under the age of 21.

Anderson plays for Manchester United and he has already won the Premier League (英超) and the Champions League (冠军联赛) with his team. In fact, Anderson even scored a penalty (点球) in the Champions League final.

”[He is] 20, with the decision-making, position-taking intelligence of a 30-year-old. Short at 1.76m, yet muscular (强健的) and rapid enough to win most physical battles,” writes Duncan Castles, reporter with Britain''s The Guardian newspaper.

And Anderson is glowing (焕发) with self-confidence. ”Scared? I''ve never been scared of anything,” he said. ”When the subject is playing football, I''m not scared of anyone. You are there for the football; you are there to have fun, to play.”

But in the eyes of Brazilian journalists, Anderson still needs time to mature (成熟). They described him as ”arrogant (傲慢的)”. ”He rolled up to the team''s London hotel in an expensive Audi R9, R&B blaring (鸣响) from the sound system and strode (大踏步) past reporters,” they said.

Anderson is honest in his attitude toward money. ”Yes, I like money a lot. Who doesn''t?”.

Anderson''s father died in 2001 and by the age of 14, his youth-team salary (薪水) in a local club in Brazil supported his mother, sister and two brothers. ”I became used to being a man very young. I was 15, but already thinking as if I was 22, 23 or 24 and making very tough decisions about my future. I had to help the family, but that was also a responsibility. And that I still do today and hope to be able to do for my family until I am 60.”

  Spears defines a generation

THE newest generation of American teenagers has been raised on a diet of YouTube, Facebook and American Idol. These inventions are harmless but when combined they have created a culture where teenagers want to be rich and famous and believe everyone should know everything about their lives.

The spokesperson for this fame-hungry, talent-less generation is Britney Spears.

At a young age, Spears seemed to have it all. She was starring on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show when she was 11. At 18, Spears released her debut album Baby One More Time. The album instantly made Spears a pop icon (偶像). She had millions of dollars and was on top of the world. But as the saying goes, “the higher you are, the harder you fall.”

With fame came an obsession (着魔) into Spears'' personal life. Photographers followed her everywhere she went. Eventually, she couldn''t take it anymore and she made a series of bad decisions. First, she married a high school friend. But the marriage only lasted a matter of hours. Then she married her back-up dancer, Kevin Federline, who was a known playboy. Then she shaved her head and suffered a big breakdown. She did all of this with the world watching.

But then her father, Jamie, stepped in and took control. Spears took sometime away from the spotlight to get things in order. Now she is promoting her new album, Circus, which is a good word to describe her life. The CD is currently No 1 in America.

It has been a crazy ride for Spears but when judging her, remember that she was once a sweet, young girl whom a lot of people thought they could make money off. Even with all she''s been through, she''s only 27 years old.

So for any young person out there, who is posting videos on YouTube and dreaming about becoming famous, remember to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.
