What danger? Hoodies just keep you warm
WHEN one Olympic host city passes the torch on to the next, the new host city usually stages a celebration of national identity (特点).
After 12 months of secret planning, London has finally revealed (透露) just what will happen at its handover (交接) performance in the closing ceremony (闭幕式) of the Beijing Olympic Games: The unruly (桀骜不驯的) spirit of Britain’s "hoodie" culture will take center stage.
The hoodie, short for "hooded sweatshirt", is upper-body clothing with a hood (兜帽). It has been popular among young people.
In the UK, however, hoodies have been the subject of much criticism as well. Some thieves have used the hood to hide their identity from monitoring (监控) cameras in shopping centers. A hoodie with a baseball cap has become a trademark (标志) of the "chavs" — young people from a low social class who are often assumed (认为) to engage in criminal (犯罪的) activity.
Gradually, however, people have begun calling for a tolerant (宽容的) attitude towards hoodies.
In 2005, Coombeshead College in southwest England allowed the hoodie to become part of the boys school uniform. In July 2006, David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, said: "The hoodie is a response to a problem, not a problem in itself. Hoodies are a way to stay invisible (隐身的) in the street. In a dangerous environment, the best thing to do is keep your head down, blend in."
The emergence (出现) of hoodie dancing has also helped people to see hoodies in a positive light. "We use dance to challenge the negative image of youth culture," said Kenrick Sandy, a choreographer (舞蹈指导) of the hoodie dancing group Boy Blue. "Many people have stereotypes and think that we''re a threat just because we wear hoodies, but that''s ridiculous. A hoodie doesn''t make you dangerous – it just keeps you warm."

Lavigne is all about music
WHO are the artists singing all day long on your MP3 player? They may be Jay Chou, Angela Chang or S.H.E. But when it comes to a foreign singer, Avril Lavigne is the one who is worth listening to.
The Canadian star's hit single Girlfriend was named the top download of 2007 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (国际唱片业协会). She will be touring China this month for her "The Best Damn Tour" concerts.
It is reported that the pop/rock princess will play at Guangzhou first on September 27, followed by other cities including Chengdu (September 30), Shanghai (October 4) and Beijing (October 6). Lavigne, 25, will perform her most popular hits in the concerts, including Complicated, Girlfriend, and My Happy Ending.
Lavigne has been on the music scene for six year. She has proven that she is not simply another pretty face. Lavigne prefers to wear loose (宽松的) trousers, old T-shirts and a frown (皱眉). That's not like the tight* clothes and sweet smiles of many pop stars.
Lavigne knew that she could never be like Britney Spears. In her high school days, "I was only around guys," she said. "I hung out with guys, playing hockey (曲棍球) and sometimes getting in fights. My band members were all guys."
It was not until she got older that she started acting more girly. "From then to now, I look really different — but that's called growing up," she said.
Lavigne was only 15 when she was discovered. At that time she had no idea how to make an album. "A career just came early for me. I was trying to figure out this life," she said. "My friends still don't know if they want to be a teacher or a doctor. When I talk to them, they'll tell me they have exams the next day."
So what does Lavigne think about life? "Life is like a roller coaster (过山车). Live it, be happy," she said.

Getting lost across the pond
DAVID Beckham, one of the world's most famous athletes, was at a press conference (新闻发布会). He held his new Los Angeles Galaxy jersey (球衣) in his hand. Beckham said he couldn't wait to play football in LA. Then he stopped, laughed and said, "I mean soccer."
Beckham, the England native, is truly an international man. So he remembered that while the games are the same, some of the sports terms are different in the United States than in Britain. Now, Beckham can't forget that while in England he plays football on a pitch (球场), in the US he plays soccer on a field.
After the game is over Beckham might want to change out of his uniform and into regular (平常的) clothes. In the US he'll be wearing sneakers and perhaps a light sweater. But if he were back home in England he'd be wearing trainers and a jumper.
After training, Beckham might need to relax. So one of his American teammates might hand Beckham a paddle (球拍) and challenge him to a ping-pong game. Even here Beckham could be confused. In Britain they call it table tennis and play with a bat.
But Beckham is rich and famous so he would never get upset. After playing ping-pong he might try to become really American and go watch a baseball game. Of course, if he didn't know better he'd ask to watch "rounders", which is what the British call baseball.
Of course, while these word differences might seem confusing, Beckham probably thinks they are no big deal. Remember, he used to play in Spain. Hay muchacho (Oh, boy)!!
